Bovine collagen is the collagen that has been extracted from the hides and bones of cows. Bovine collagen powder from Nutrabytes is sourced from grass-fed bovine and is manufactured in the EU (Netherlands).

The differences between bovine and marine collagen is to do with their sources, their amino acid profiles, and their molecular size. 

  • Sources

Bovine collagen is made from the hide, i.e., skin, and bones of the bovine (cows). That’s why it is sometimes also known as bovine hide collagen peptides. Marine collagen is mostly made from the skin and scales of fish, and sometimes from other marine creatures like shellfish.  

  • Amino Acid Profile

The amino acid profile of marine and bovine collagen differs. Bovine collagen is higher in glycine and hydroxyproline, while marine collagen has comparatively higher amounts of alanine. 

  • Molecular Size

Marine collagen is known to have a smaller molecular size than bovine collagen. The smaller the molecule size of a nutrient, the easier it is for it to pass through the walls of the gut. However, given that both marine and bovine collagen are usually consumed as hydrolysed peptides, there shouldn’t be much difference in absorption or efficacy.

The human body cannot absorb bovine collagen in its natural form because the molecule size is too large. That is why bovine collagen is broken into smaller amino acids called peptides by the process of hydrolysis. The gut easily absorbs these smaller-sized hydrolysed bovine collagen peptides into the bloodstream.
